What "respite care" actually means

Respite is short-term, temporary care that gives you — the person doing the caring — a genuine break. It can be a few hours so you can get to appointments or simply leave the house, a weekend away, or planned time to recover from your own illness or surgery. It can happen in your own home, at a day programme, or as a short stay in a residential facility.

Most carers never actually look into respite. Not because they don't need it, but because they assume — without ever checking — that it's out of reach financially. That assumption is often wrong, and it's a costly one to make: it can mean months or years of running on empty when help was there the whole time.

The truth is cost varies hugely. It depends on the type of respite you choose, how many hours or days you need, and which government subsidies or programmes you're eligible for in your country — and those variables interact in ways that are genuinely hard to work out in your head. That's the gap this tool is built to close: instead of guessing, or assuming the worst and giving up before you start, you get a real, personalised estimate based on your own situation.

One thing worth being upfront about: what follows is an estimate to help you plan and have an informed conversation — not a quote. Actual prices, availability and eligibility rules vary by provider and change over time, so always confirm current costs directly with the specific provider and the relevant government programme before you book anything.
